Walbaum Victorious on Mobil One Racing Oil Night at CNS

(04-12-2014 Dacono, CO) In what turned out to be a beautiful spring evening at CNS Jeff Walbaum held off a surprising charge from newcomer in the Late Model division David Rothrock who pressured Walbaum for the lead for the entire 30 lap feature event.

South Philly Cheese Steaks Late Models Late Model #8 Jeff Walbaum sent a message in qualifying that he is the car to beat in the 2014 season as he set quick time with a blistering 17.648 and with Walbaum on the pole position for the feature it looked like he might run away and hide from the rest of the field. However that wasn’t the case as #88 David Rothrock in his gorgeous red Camaro was hot on Walbaum’s tail for the entire event. In fact after a late race caution Rothrock briefly grabbed the lead forcing Walbaum to pass him back on the inside a lap later.

The two leaders hit lapped traffic and that’s when Walbaum began to put a little bit of distance on Rothrock. The hard charger of the night was clearly #99 Nick Brinlee who started way back in 11th yet had worked his way into the top 5 to challenge #17 Paul Deines and #76 Chad Cowen. When the checkered flag flew Walbaum grabbed the win with Rothrock close behind. However a post-race tech infraction sent Rothrock back to 5th position. Last years champion Paul Deines was awarded 2nd with Brinlee in 3rd. Cowen took the 4th place spot with Rothrock in 5th and an impressive run for #75 Emilio Abeyta taking 6th place.

Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks A great field of 18 Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks showed up for their first race of the 2014 season and when the green flag dropped for the feature event the bright yellow #07 of Adam Deines jumped out to an early lead.

An intense battle for position raged behind Deines between #34 Rudy Vanderwal, #06 Adam Hilton, and #36 Matt Burton. Eventually Vanderwal pulled up on the outside of Deines to challenge for the lead and in daring fashion Hilton went low attempting to make a 3-wide pass for the lead in turns 1 and 2. Hilton’s truck went sideways and it looked as if disaster was certain but Adam did an incredible job keeping his truck from spinning or making contact with any other drivers, although Hilton was never able to make another challenge for the lead. Rudy snuck by Deines and hung on to win the race. In winner’s circle Vanderwal stated it was a very satisfying victory after losing the 2013 season championship by just a single point. Adam Deines took 2nd place, Hilton salvaged a 3rd place finish, and #36 Matt Burton and #2 AJ Warren were 4th and 5th.

SUNOCO Fuels Grand American Modifieds In the off-season somebody must have leaked rocket fuel into Justin Case’s bloodstream because he was faster than he had ever been on the 3/8ths paved oval. Not only did Justin set quick time with a 17.101, but he also won the FAST DASH and dominated the feature event taking the first win of the 2014 season. The best action on the track was between #0 Ron O’Neal and #8 Dan Alamaa as they battled for 2nd place with Alamaa getting the advantage in the final few laps.

Lincoln College Pure Stocks The Pure Stock division at CNS is a guaranteed “thrill-ride” with action throughout the pack and fender bending and tire squealing from start to finish. The first Pure Stock feature of the 2014 was no different with #96 Mike Steward and #57 Bubba Willox battling for the lead lap after lap. 21w Jamie Ward was also in the mix as was “the Maverick” Brett Yackey in the #32 car making his first appearance in a race at CNS. Last year’s champ #06 Jeff Dempewolf started at the back of the pack and was working his way to the front to catch the leaders. Unfortunately there was a long delay for a oil cleanup that stole some of the drama of the event. Willox went on to take the win with Ward, Dempewolf, and Yackey close behind.
