Ray, Hansen, & Ursetta, Thrill in the Super Late Model Feature

(07-30-2016 Dacono, CO) The Van’s Equipment Gets It Done Night at CNS was filled with drama and excitement as both the Super Late Models and Late Models thrilled the large crowd with hair-raising finishes. Kyle Ray, Jace Hansen, and Dominic Ursetta, had a three car battle to the finish in the Super Late Models and Brett Yackey and Mike Valentine dueled to the checker in the Late Models. Ron O’Neil led flag to flag in the Mod Coupes and Chris DeShon and Cole Whitford won in the RZR’s and Mod 4 Race Rentals.

Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

After the qualifying and dash races were complete it seemed apparent that the two fastest Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models were #6 Dominic Ursetta and #58 Kyle Ray. Ray had set quick time with a 16.302 and Ursetta had snagged the fast dash. This set up an exciting start to the 40 lap feature as Ray had the pole and Ursetta was along side.

When the green flag dropped it was Ursetta who bolted out to the early lead and looked extremely fast. Ray hung back in second place for several laps but eventually worked his way up to Ursetta’s bumper and the two drivers began to battle for the lead. Behind the leaders #08 Jace Hansen and #12 Bruce Yackey rode in 3rd and 4th. Hansen found his groove and began to pull up on the leaders.

The race heated up even more when Ray edged his way to the low side of Ursetta coming out of turn four and grabbed the lead for himself. Ursetta was having none of that and pulled along side of Ray once again but the two cars touched in turn 2 allowing Hansen who was in 3rd to pass both of them and snatch the lead for himself! Clearly at this point in the race any of these three drivers were capable of taking home the win.

However when the caution came out for #11 Darren Robertson and #9 Justin Simonson it allowed Ray to restart on the outside of Hansen which was just what he needed as he powered out front and never looked back taking his 3rd win of the season. Hansen and Ursetta were right behind but could not make a move for the lead and settled for 2nd and 3rd place. Bruce Yackey crossed the line 4th and #84 Matt Zwingleberg was 5th.

Palomino Industries Late Models

#19 Robert Davey and #3 Wade Grove paced the field for the Palomino Industries Late Models and each driver took a turn leading the race, Davey on lap one and Grove on lap two. Enter Brett Yackey in the #32 car who went low on Grove to take the lead on lap three with #18 Mike Valentine in tow. Valentine who has impressed this season dove low on Yackey who looked loose coming out of turn two to take the lead for himself. Yackey was doing all he could to get back around the 18 but the rookie driver was holding him off.

Behind the two leaders another great battle was taking shape between Grove and #88 Brent Miller. Miller worked his way around Grove and began to push into the lead pack making it a four car race for the top spot. As the lead pack approached lapped traffic in turn four Yackey made contact with Valentine sending him sideways as he was tagged by Miller in 3rd who had nowhere to go. Incredibly Valentine did not spin maintaining second place in a fantastic display of driving.

While Valentine had saved his car from the spin he wasn’t able to get back around Yackey even after two late race restarts with just 6 and 3 laps remaining. Yackey went on to take the win and Valentine took home an impressive second place finish. Grove grabbed third place, #49 Dennis Pobanz was 4th and Robert Davey was fifth.

The Late Models have 3 points races remaining on August 20th, 27th and then Championship night on September 24th.
