Nugent and Robertson spin on the final corner, Ursetta takes the win

Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Models The Famous Dave’s BBQ Special featured a 80 lap, 2 segment, Super Late Model race. The first segment being a 30 lap event and then the crews are allowed to make adjustments before the final 50 segment to cap off the night’s events. In the first segment #66 Darren Bucklen and #31 Rick Smith raced side by side for several laps thrilling the crowd. Yet when Smith slowed on the track and pulled into the pits Bucklen was now all alone out front. #39 Jack Nugent eventually caught Bucklen and began to work him on the low side but Darren was hooked up in the high groove and held off Nugent, #12 Bruce Yackey, #6 Dominic Urestta, and #11 Darren Robertson. By winning segment 1 Bucklen would start on the pole for the final 50 lap segment.

The 50 lap, 2nd segment started as the first ended but only after the crews had their chance to make adjustments to the their cars. It appeared the crew of the #39 car driven by Jack Nugent of Lafayette CO had made the right moves as he bolted out to the lead at the start. #66 Darren Bucklen who won segment 1 didn’t seem to have the same speed up top as he began to fade a bit losing positions to #12 Bruce Yackey, #11 Darren Robertson, and #6 Dominic Ursetta.

#22 Chris Eggleston who started in the rear of the field due to mechanical problems in segment 1 was clearly the “hard charger” as he was picking off cars left and right moving up through the field in exciting fashion. Another car that made the right adjustments was Westminster’s Darren Robertson who lap after lap was closing in on Nugent who had built a large lead on the field. With 10 laps remaining Robertson was eating away at Nugent’s lead and it was evident that he would indeed catch him before the race would finish but no one in the crowd was prepared for what happened next. On the final turn of the final lap Nugent drifted a bit high to avoid slower cars at the same time Robertson was doing all he could to grab the win. With Nugent slightly out of the groove he slowed just enough and Robertson’s car touched his left rear quarter panel sending both cars spinning in turn 4. The black #6 of young Dominic Ursetta sailed past the two leaders to take his first ever Super Late Feature event at CNS. Behind Ursetta, was Bucklen, Yackey, Eggleston, and #5 Trent Phillips. Robertson limped across the line in eleventh place and Nugent a disappointed thirteenth.

Pair A Dice Interior Finishes Late Models It isn’t often that the Late Models and the Super Late Models race on the same night at CNS but this week the fans were in for a rare treat when both of these premier divisions were on tap for the nights event. The 30 lap Late Model feature had #8 Jeff Walbaum and #19 Scott Miller on the front row and when the green dropped it was Walbaum who jumped out to an early lead. As Walbaum and Miller began to distance themselves from the field the battle for 3rd place intensified between #17 Paul Deines, #84 Bruce Borchardt, #98 Lee Kemmit, and #99 Nick Brinlee. Deines eventually separated himself from that pack and even overtook Miller for 2nd place and set his sights on Walbaum out front. Yet the black #8 car of Walbaum was just too fast to catch as he led all  30 laps to take the victory.

Race Central Media Legend Cars Another massive field of Legend car was on hand to compete in their Friday-Saturday double-header event at CNS. Friday’s event was dominated by Albuquerque’s Jason Irwin in the 9i car but Irwin would need to come from the 6th starting spot to have a chance at Saturday’s feature. Early on it appeared that Irwin might be able to do just that as he bolted past #15 Danny Medina, #06 Mike Gallegos, #13 Pete Dellarco, and #66 Kyle Clegg. Yet when Irwin pulled up on the bumper of Ray to battle for the lead, Ray wasn’t giving an inch staying as low as he could to keep Irwin in 2nd. As the two leaders entered turn 3 Irwin’s bumper locked up with Ray and sent the leader spinning. Irwin was sent to the rear and Ray was given his spot back up front. With just 8 laps to go Irwin furiously flew up through the field and finished a respectable 7th place out of 31 cars. Ray went on take the win followed by #22 Chris Eggleston, #66 Kyle Clegg, #06 Mike Gallegos, and #21 Ryan Jones.
