Matco Tools Championship Night Ended Prematurely By Rain – But We Still Had Some Good Racing

September 21, 2024 ~ Dacono, CO

Colorado National Speedway is known for speed, and with several championships hanging in the balance, we made a valiant attempt to outrun the impending rain on Saturday, September 21st, 2024. For a while, it looked like we had the weather beat – we started early, and our Grand American Modifieds, Figure 8s, and Super Stocks were each able to complete one Championship Feature race. Unfortunately, right after the third race was wrapped up, the storm socked in and drenched the asphalt. While Pro Trucks were scheduled to finish out their 2024 season, the division Championship has been rescheduled for September 28th, 2024.

Even so, our fans got a nice send-off thanks to the Matco Tools trucks, which got out on track to turn some laps and give our attendees something to cheer for.

Sunoco Race Fuels Grand American Modifieds

Feature – 20 Laps

The points race between the No. 24 of Nathan Gasser and the No. 21 of Ryan Jones was razor thin heading into what would be the final race of the season – just three points separated them! To say the GAMs got off to a chaotic start would be an understatement – they wrecked in Turn 3 before the green flag even waved. Officials quickly gathered the pack back together and reset the field, putting the No. 2M of Anthony Buckley and the No. 18V of Ed Vecchiarelli beside one another to start on the front row. Before they could get going, the No.  of David Robison went for a neat little spin in Turn 3, collecting the No. 13S of Jordon Smith, neutralizing the field again and forcing the pack back for another complete restart. A third time, Turn 3 proved to be the GAM field’s undoing as the No. 98 of Todd Glace braked a bit too hard, causing the No. 24 of Nathan Gasser and Jones to spin to avoid clobbering other drivers.

Finally, the field got a lap in. Vecchiarelli took advantage of the quick pace to launch himself into the lead. Buckley, meanwhile, fell through the pack, clipping the No. 32 of Cody Milan. A caution flag ensued, putting Vecchiarelli up front again, and he wasted no time in defending his lead when the green flag fell once more. The No. 9 of CJ Wilson began a steady forward march, overtaking Buckley for P3 and pulling the No. 69 of Forest Smith through the hole with him. Vecchiarelli set sail, easily gapping the No. 2 of Steve Rodenbaugh, while Gasser and Jones had already fought back to mid-pack after their earlier dustup. Forest Smith, meanwhile, got into the No. 3 of Jeremiah Hill, causing the latter driver to spin. While nobody else got collected, the caution flag waved.

This put Vecchiarelli up front alongside Rodenbaugh to defend his lead. He got the jump, with Wilson hot on his tail, followed by the No. 51 of Kyle Clegg , who soared into P3. Wilson got side-by-side with Rodenbaugh for P2. Their battled allowed Vecchiarelli to get away with the lead as Rodenbaugh took P2. Gasser caught Wilson and gave him a run for third, meanwhile. The pack strung out in single-file formation after that. Vecchiarelli put on a clinic and cruised under the checkered flag without contest for the win. Gasser, who finished third, clinched the 2024 title after a stellar season. The sting of missing out on the title was lessened by Jones’ title as Rookie of the Year.

Pueblo Bank & Trust Super Stocks

Feature – 20 Laps

Twenty-two snarling Super Stocks took the green flag behind the No. 64 of Justin Eisenhauer and the No. 75 driven by Emilio Abeyta. The clean start gave way to Abeyta leading the first lap, while the pack fanned out three-wide toward the middle of the gaggle. The No. M60 of Morris Christner bodied past Eisenhauer to claim second as Eisenhauer continued a backward slide through the pack. The No. 4 of Chris Jordan, meanwhile, took some risks and swung beneath Christner’s machine before painting a target on Abeyta. After a brief battle, Abeyta fell in behind Jordan, who settled in and took off with the lead. The No. 61 of John Humphrey overtook Eisenhauer, who had been barely hanging onto fourth place, as the No. 10W of Gauge Witthar spun out but cleared the pack. Brent Cave sent his No. 9 past Eisenhauer now, knocking him out of the top five.

While Jordan continued to pace the field, Christner and Humphrey banged doors, but managed to keep their race cars headed in the right direction. However, their dustup opened the door for Cave to cut the distance and put pressure on them both. Not to be denied, Humphrey shot past Christner and Abeyta in one fell swoop, taking second with Cave slotting into third. Abeyta briefly lost the back end of his race car but managed to get it back under control, although he plummeted in the standings because of it. Out front, Jordan caught slower traffic and deftly navigated through, solidifying his lead as Cave tried to put Humphrey behind him. The No. 97 of Kyle Stidham suffered a flat tire and had to retire, stacking up the field as his race car suddenly slowed, but it wasn’t enough to draw a yellow as he exited the speedway. Jordan cruised around the last few turns with a comfortable lead, flashing across the stripe to claim his first-ever Super Stock Feature victory.

All said and done, Dillyn Kellog, driver of the No. 33, beat out Isaac Almaswari, driver of the No. 8, as Rookie of the Year. Chris Cox, driver of the No. 49, was rewarded for his incredible season with the 2024 title.

Exhaust Pros Northglenn Figure 8s

Feature – 15 Laps

Isaiah Proctor threw his No. 20 machine to the point, lunging ahead of the No. 97 of Adam Gastineau to lead the first lap. It didn’t take long for the No. 08 of Travis Sanders to sweep past them both, though, surging into the lead with the No. 17 of Harry Livermore Jr. hot on his heels. Sanders continued to lead, catching traffic, but the relatively tame race took a turn on Lap 6 – Livermore and the No. 18 of Dennis Stepanich got together. The No. 8 of Cassidy Creekmore sustained heavy damage in the incident, but it didn’t end there – Gastineau tagged Sanders and spun, slowing the F8 course under caution. Stepanich’s race car had to be towed off.

Sanders maintained the lead through it all. The No. 3 of Michael Wolfe Jr. had clawed his way to third place and began to work on passing Proctor for second. The No. 15 of Jereme Wall had also worked his way into fourth, picking off the field one by one on his way to the front. In short order, Wolfe had Sanders in his clutches and passed him with ease. Creekmore, powering through the damage to her machine, narrowly escaped being struck in The X. Jereme Wall worked on passing Sanders for second place, sliding past him with two laps left, but their battle slowed them up and let Wolfe get away with the lead uncontested. Jereme Wall finally sliced his way into second place, but didn’t have enough time to cut down on Wolfe’s lead. Wolfe crossed the line first.

Jereme Wall’s runner-up showing was good enough to snag the 2024 F8 title – his eighth overall! – and Javon Barnard, driver of the No. 38, bested the rest to win the honors of Rookie of the Year.

Feature: No. 3, Michael Wolfe Jr.

2024 F8 Champion: No. 15, Jereme Wall

2024 F8 ROTY: No. 38, Javon Barnard
