On a beautiful chamber of commerce November afternoon a packed pit side grandstands enjoyed some incredible off season racing at Colorado National Speedway.
The 2022 Battle of the Fenders entered its 6th annual event & brought out some of the best pavement & dirt stock cars, super stocks, hornets & even a full size pickup truck.
43 drivers started the 300 lap event with #11 Pickup Timothy Bland & #09 Brandon Williams on the front row. An engine blew early causing a caution period, however when the race went back to green #90 Lee Kemmit & #1 Tommy Roe who won last year's event was on the move coming from mid pack, as by lap 40 #1 Tommy Roe was in the lead with #90 Kemmit close behind. On Lap 68 the events only red flag was displayed as the 41G Christopher Galvin slammed into the turn 2 barrier sending shrapnel all over the speedway. Despite the impact, Galvin kept his foot in it as if nothing happened and drove out of the debris field with fans going crazy in the grandstands. After the red flag, #97 Ray Hansen had moved passed #1 Roe & set his sights on #90 Kemmit, by lap 100 Kemmit & Hansen were nose to tail and on lap 110 #97 Hansen was able to get by #90 Kemmit for the lead while in heavy traffic. The remaining 40 laps clicked off fast as #97 Ray Hansen kept the lead and took home the $500 halfway break bonus.
Teams were allowed 20 minutes to refuel & switch drivers during the halfway break. Once racing resumed, a couple of cautions early slowed the field and on the lap 142 restart #90 Kemmit drove by #97 Hansen to regain the lead. Kemmit began to show how strong his Camaro was as he began to pull away from 2nd & 3rd. It took until lap 227 for Kemmit to be the only remaining car on the lead lap, despite #97 Hansen’s best efforts to try to get back around Kemmit to get back on the lead lap, he was not able to prevail & #90 Lee Kemmit captured his 2nd Battle of the Fenders 300.
Thanks to all the drivers & teams for making this event a huge success, we are looking forward to the 2023 Battle of the Fenders.
