KBPI Rocks the Rockies at CNS with a thrilling night of action

August 3rd, 2024 ~ Dacono, CO

KBPI Rocked the Rockies & CNS on Saturday August 3rd. A hot night meant fans were flocking to the concession stands to grab an ice cold Dasani or Coors Light before settling down for a fantastic night of racing. The event featured several great divisions including Super Late Models, Late Models, Grand American Modifieds, and Demo X... and our friend Willie B from KBPI was even on hand to host a fantastic round of circle drags at intermission. Les Cowan in his Silver 2023 Camaro ZL1 outpaced a Subaru WRX to take the circle drags win. If you missed any of the action or want to relive the action, keep reading on.

CNS CIRCLE DRAGS

Bella Flooring America Super Late Models

Fast Dash - 10 Laps

Former Super Late Model Champion Dominic Ursetta returned to CNS after a few year absence, alongside Super Late Model Rookie No. 22Y Brian Yackey. Ursetta jumped out to the lead from the start but Brian Yackey fought back on the inside to remain side by side. Brian’s brother Brett Yackey was in a battle of his own side by side with No. 11 Darren Robertson for third. Brett Yackey shook Robertson and began to work on getting by Brian Yackey for the runner up spot. Brett Yackey made a great move to get around Brian Yackey and set his sights on Ursetta. A couple laps later, Brett Yackey caught Ursetta who left the inside lane open which was enough for Brett Yackey to get to the inside and get by for the lead. Robertson got by Brian Yackey to take third and eventually made a pass on Ursetta who faded late as Brett Yackey lead the final laps to capture the Fast Dash win.

Dash - 10 Laps

No. 29 Matt Brunker led the field around to lead lap 1 while outside front row starter No. 25 Monty Skinner plummeted to the back with No. 12 Bruce Yackey taking over second place and looked to chase after Brunker. Brunker held the lead until lap 4 when Yackey got to his inside and took the lead down the backstretch. No. 24 Nathan Gasser; sitting in third looked to pounce on the battle as Yackey pulled away. Gasser tried everything he could to get around Brunker for second which culminated in slight contact in Turn 3; sending Brunker up the racetrack. Brunker was able to keep the car under him and fell back to third. Meanwhile, Yackey led the single file pack around to grab the dash win.

Feature - 40 Laps

No. 82 Michael Scott & No. 22Y Brian Yackey led the thundering field of Super Late Models to the green flag. Brian Yackey led lap one as Scott got sideways in Turn 4 which allowed Brian Yackey to breakaway from the pack. One lap later, Robertson’s No. 11 got to the inside of Scott for second place and shot by him setting his sights on Brian Yackey for the lead. Just as Robertson was putting pressure on Brian Yackey, the yellow flag flew for the No. 41, Jim Gress who spun down the backstretch as a result of No. 37 Ethan Hunter laying fluid on the track turn 2. The NASCAR Officials made quick work of the clean up, and on the restart Robertson took off with the lead and cleared Brian Yackey in Turn 2 to set sail. Meanwhile, Brett Yackey went three-wide in Turn 3 with Scott and father Bruce Yackey to take over 4th. Robertson began to open up a big lead with a battle brewing for third as Ursetta and Brett Yackey went side by side, with Brett Yackey taking over the position and looking to also get by his brother Brian Yackey for 2nd.

On lap 11, Brett Yackey closed in on the bumper Brian Yackey for second. Brett made short work of brother Brian; using a solid front bumper nudge to loosen the 22Y car and sneaking right underneath him. The 22Y let Brett know he wasn’t happy with a nudge in return; but it was only enough to propel the faster Yackey ahead of the pack. Now with an open track, Brett Yackey started to chase down Robertson who had opened up a full straightaway lead on the field. Just past halfway, Brett Yackey began noticeably closing in on Robertson for the lead and got within 5 car lengths of the lead before leveling off and not able to make much more headway on Robertson for the lead. As the laps ticked down, the field strung out single file. Robertson encountered a couple lapped cars with just a handful of laps to go; which allowed him to open up a bigger gap on Brett Yackey and ultimately to the checkered flag. Robertson was all smiles in victory lane after picking up his first Super Late Model win of the season.

Fast Dash - 10 Laps

Rookie Jordan Abeyta in No. 23 jumped out to the lead early; followed closely by No. 8 Dan Alamaa while a fierce battle for third was ensuing between No. 40 Brandon Newey & No. 18 Casey Wiggins. Newey got by Wiggins in short order and brought the No. A51 Kyle Clegg with him on the inside relegating Wiggans back to fourth. A couple laps later, Clegg caught third place runner Newey and got by him on lap 6. Abeyta continued to stretch his lead over Alamaa who began to fade, and eventually came in the clutches of Clegg who got by Alamaa for second with a couple laps to go. Abeyta would go on to win the fast dash, while QuickTime No. 51 Eric Meisner found his way in a battle for third coming to finish line and found another gear to around Alamaa by a nose for third.

Dash - 10 Laps

No. 32 Joseph Andrade got the hole shot on No. 58 Bryce Weinmaster to lead the first lap. Weinmaster appeared to have an issue as he fell all the way to the back of the pack, which allowed No. 99 Tessa Marine to take over second. A great battle was shaping up between No. 5 Del Trantham Jr & No. 17 Paul Deines. Trantham got by Deines and immediately got to Marine’s inside to take second. Andrade continued to stretch his lead over the field, while No. 16 Steve Mills was making moves navigating through cars to get to Marine running third and eventually past Trantham for second. Mills ran out of laps as Andrade flashed under the finish line to grab the dash win.

Feature - 30 Laps

Newey & Wiggans led the field to green and it didn’t take long for the action to start. Coming out of turn 2, Meisner went three-wide with Alamaa & Wiggans; grabbing two spots in one corner and netting him second place. Newey got to a 5 car length lead with a hungry Meisner closing fast on his rear bumper. On lap 4 Meisner got past Newey and set sail with the lead. Clegg was on the move battling with Alamaa for third and taking the position on lap 6. Newey, running second pulled off with an issue which handed over second to Clegg. Clegg has some work to do to catch Meisner who had opened up a sizable gap; however, lap after lap Clegg chomped down on the Meisner’s lead.

At the mid point in the race, Meisner began to encounter lapped car who were battling side by side; and with nowhere to go, Clegg was able to pounce and get to the rear bumper of Meisner. Once the leaders cleared lapped traffic, Meisner was able to put a slight bit of distance between himself and Clegg. Meanwhile, a great battle was taking place in fifth between Abeyta & Mills who were both fighting to get a top 5 finish as the laps ticked down. Up front, Clegg got sideways two consecutive laps which allowed Meisner to create some distance between them. Although Meisner encountered more lapped traffic with just a few laps to go, he was able to work around them and would go on to secure his second win of the season.

Sunoco Grand American Modifieds

Fast Dash - 10 Laps

No. 24 Nathan Gasser shot out to the lead in a hurry over No. 3 Jeremiah Hill, and brought with the No. 51 Kyle Clegg who was pulling double duty (GAM and LM) on the outside line. Hill started to plummet through the field; allowing the No. 13S Jordan Smith & No. 08 Jace Hansen to get by and battle for third. Halfway through the Fast Dash, Clegg was looking for a way to get by Gasser – trying inside then outside – but couldn’t make anything stick. Hansen finally got around Smith for 3rd and began trying to track down Gasser & Clegg. On the final lap, Clegg finally got his chance to get side by side with Gasser and they drag-raced to the start finish line with Clegg using the outside line to nip Gasser by a half a car length.

Dash - 10 Laps

Leading the field to green, the No. 98 of Todd Glace didn’t get going on the initial start which allowed No. 55 Damian Lockhart to get away with the lead. Glace then got sideways which caused  No. 69 Forest Smith & No. 89 Jacob Smith to split Glace; resulting in slight contact between Forest Smith & Glace and allowing Jacob Smith to take over second. Jacob Smith began to track down Lockhart for the lead; wearing out his bumper with a couple laps to go. On the final lap, Lockhart got loose in Turn 2 and Jacob Smith capitalized by diving to the inside, and the two drivers battled to the start finish line with Lockhart narrowly edging out Jacob Smith for the Dash win.

Feature - 30 Laps

No. 6 Scotty Scott & QuickTime No. 21 Ryan Jones led the rumbling pack of 18 Grand American Modifieds to the green flag. Scott led lap 1, however he could not shake Jones who was still fighting on the outside line. The two made slight contact and bounced apart down the backstretch but maintained their positions; then No. 88 Paul Himler spun down the backstretch, got going again, and then spun out again on the front stretch to bring out the yellow. On the ensuing restart, Jones managed to use the high line to his advantage and take the lead; Scott fell into the clutches of Hansen & Clegg who split Scott and maintained a side by side battle for second. On lap 6, Hansen finally shook Clegg for second and started after Jones as the top 7 spread out in single file formation. A few short laps later, Hansen caught Jones and began stalking his back bumper as the two raced in the same tire tracks around the speedway.

At the halfway point, Hansen could only maintain distance from Jones; unable to make a challenge at the Green & Orange car. A couple laps later, the yellow flew for possible oil on the racetrack. Officials inspected the track and made quick work of a small clean up. The field was restacked with Jones & Hansen on the front row. Jones got a great restart which propelled him into the lead; however, it was short lived as several cars towards the back of the pack got together with No. 3 Jeremiah Hill & No. 55 Damian Lockhart taking the most damage. Another restart put Jones & Hansen side by side again. This time, Hansen didn’t get going which allowed Clegg to take advantage and get beside him. Hansen was ultimately able to hold off Clegg as the top 5 began to separate from each other single file. Jones continued to click off laps with a nice advantage over Hansen. Jones flashed across the finish line first; however, upon post-race inspection Jones received a 2 position penalty giving the win to Hansen, his second win of the season.
