Dominic Ursetta and Kyle Ray Sweep the Final Races at CNS

(10-05-2013 Dacono, CO) The final race for the 2013 season at CNS honored the birthday of our good friend and loyal employee Johnny Witthar. Not only was there a great birthday bash there was also plenty of fantastic short track racing. Wild action in the Xtreme Trucks, DEMOX, and Trains, thrilled the fans before the lights shut down for the final time in 2013. Dominic Ursetta in the Super Late Models and Kyle Ray in the Legend Cars swept the night setting quick time and winning BOTH segments of their respective divisions.

Gillet Vet Clinic Super Late Models

A huge field of Super Late Models showed up for the final race of the season at CNS. This was a non-points race so the drivers were racing for fun, pride, and money! The night’s events were broken into two feature segments; a 30 lap feature and then a final 50 feature allowing drivers and teams to make adjustments in-between the two segments.

It was evident early on that young Dominic Ursetta in the #6 Productive Data Solutions Impala might be the car to beat as he qualified at a blistering 16.030 nearly breaking into the 15 second bracket.

Lap after lap Ursetta pushed Smith for the lead but Rick wasn’t giving an inch as he maintained the top spot. With 7 laps to go a crash in turn 4 involving 12t Tyler Reedy and #19 Matt Martinez brought out the caution flag. The yellow was bad news for Ursetta as he had just made the pass for the lead on Smith. On the restart Smith stuttered and Ursetta pounced on the top spot. Once Dominic was out front he built a large lead on Smith and cruised to the segment one win. The only negative was in winner’s circle Dominic rolled a “6” on the large dice placing his black #6 in 6th for the start of the final 50 lap segment.

The last 50 laps of the 2013 season would start with #66 Darren Bucklan and #78 Darren Crocker on the front row. Bucklan had a slow start when the race went green and Crocker jumped out to the lead. To the surprise of the crowd Crocker began to put distance between he and the rest of the field. Even after a couple of restarts it appeared that the white #78 of Crocker had made the right adjustments during the break and was the car to beat. Ursetta had come from the 6th starting spot and was now running in 2nd behind Crocker and was beginning to pressure him for the lead. Yackey and Smith were having a battle of their own in 3rd and 4th position. The 2013 Late Model Champ Paul Deines had brought out his black #17 Super Late Model and was having a great run maintaining 5th spot with the Furniture Row #11 of Darren Robertson right behind.

Ursetta must have had an ace up his sleeve when on the restart he blasted out front using the high-groove to perfection. Yackey had moved around Crocker and was right on Ursetta’s bumper. It was a cold night at CNS but the final 5 laps of action heated up the crowd as Ursetta was attempting to hold off the crafty veteran Yackey. The determined Ursetta cruised into winner’s circle sweeping both segments of the feature as well as setting quick time. Clearly Ursetta is sending a message that he is ready to compete for the championship in 2014. Yackey settled for 2nd but is still basking in the glow of his amazing 8th season championship. Crocker finished an impressive 3rd, #11 Darren Robertson muscled his way into 4th, and Smith was 5th.

Race Central Media Legend Cars Some of the fastest Legend Cars in the entire country were on hand for the final race at CNS. Erie’s own #22 Chris Eggleston who is the 2013 track champion, #66 Kyle Clegg, #58 Kyle Ray, #15 Danny Medina from Colorado Springs, and 9i of Jason Irwin from New Mexico were all capable of bringing home victory.

For the first 20 lap segment Ray and Medina were on the front row and when the race started and the cars were entering turn 3 Ray’s car appeared to slow creating a accordion effect on the field causing several cars to spin and crash. Most notably Eggleston and Clegg were both hauled off the track. While Clegg would return in the second segment, Eggleston’s night was done.

On the restart Ray jumped out to a huge lead but Albequrque’s Jason Irwin was in 2nd and trying to gain on the leader. Medina found his groove and retook 2nd place from Irwin and appeared that he might have been the fastest car on the track but it was too little too late as Ray took the checkered in the first segment.

The final 40 lap segment lined up as the first segment finished with Ray on the pole, Medina on the outside, and Irwin right behind. Medina slowed and pulled off the track in the early stages of the race but one of several caution flags worked to his advantage as he was able to come back on the track without losing a lap (although he was now dead-last). Ray picked up where he left off in segment 1 and was leading the field yet the #3 of Wayne Barlock Jr. made his presence felt as he passed Irwin for 2nd place. Kyle Clegg who started last because of the crash in the first segment had quickly moved up and was running in 7th position.

At the halfway mark in the race the cars had spread out with Ray Leading Barlock and Irwin. Yet the car to watch was Danny Medina as he was blazing a trail through the field catching the leaders in daring fashion. Clegg had also masterfully worked to the front and now taken over 3rd position. But on this night no driver or team had anything for the #58 of Kyle Ray who set quick time and won both segments of a very exciting night of Legend Car racing. Medina finished an impressive 2nd considering all the ground he had to make up. Irwin settled for 3rd, Barlock took 4th, and #6 Scotty Scott was the final top 5 finisher.

Whitthar Racing TRAINS The Train feature was highlighted by the #69 Twisted Sister Train that flipped entering the “X” after getting sideways coming out of turn 4. Both Princess Tammy and Bombshell were uninjured in the crash. The trickiest part was for the safety crew attempting to figure out how to flip the large train back on it’s wheels. After the race resumed the #86 Last Call Train went on to take the victory.
