Brett Yackey Takes His Second Win and Walbaum Gets His First in the Trucks

(05-21-2016 Dacono CO) Greeley’s Brett Yackey made a late race pass on rookie Mike Valentine from Gering Nebraska to win his second straight Palomino Industries Late Models feature event of the season. In the Pro Trucks Jeff Walbaum from Brighton won the feature holding off youngster Kody Vanderwal from La Salle. In the Lincoln College of Technology Pure Stocks it was Tyler Davis coming from deep in the field to take the win while Randy Whitman led every lap of the Galitz Trucking Mod Coupes.

Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks

#47 Jesse Seigel and #5 Troy Witthar lined up side by side to start the 30 lap Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks feature event. Witthar powered to the front as the entire field circled the track in a tight pack. #36 Matt Burton was in 3rd place but sending off a large shower of sparks in every corner. Burton would eventually get the back flag and have to go to the pits to make repairs.

Former late Model champ Jeff Walbaum used the outside lane to go around Witthar to take the lead several laps into the race. Jyst moments later Adam Deines in the bright yellow #7 moved up on Walbaum’s bumper and began to pressure for the lead with #43 Kody Vanderwal close behind in 3rd place.

Deines made his move to pass Walbaum on the inside and the two trucks began to put on a great battle for the lead in front of the large CNS crowd. Deines was faster down the straight but Walbaum could maintain his speed better around the corners. It looked as if the two drivers might battle this way for the remainder of the race but disaster struck for Deines as he tried to avoid contact with Walbaum but got sideways making hard contact with the back straight wall. While Adam was okay his chances for winning the race were over.

Walbaum would then have to battle with Kody Vanderwal in the closing stages of the race but once again used the outside line to perfection taking his first win in the Pro Truck division. Vanderwal settled for second with #9 Curtis Heldenbrand grabbing the 3rd spot. Witthar would take home 4th with #2 AJ Warren securing the final spot in the top five.

Palomino Industries Late Models

It would take 30 laps and plenty of drama to determine the winner of the Palomino Late Model feature event. While #11 Monte Paulsen and #76 Chad Cowan started on the front front it was impressive rookie #18 Michael Valentine who would take control of the race on lap two. Valentine was not only leading but putting distance between himself and #31 Derek Smith who was running 2nd.

Deep in the field #32 Brett “the maverick” Yackey and #7 Ethan Penrod were methodically working their way up through the field. On lap 9 #16 Ryan McFadden and #19 Robert Davey made contact on the back straight and brought out the caution bunching the field back up for a double-file restart. After the race resumed Valentine continued to lead but now Penrod and Yackey were right on his tail. As Penrod attempted to pass Valentine on the inside coming out of turn 4 he made contact and sent the #18 spinning down the front straight. Penrod would be sent to rear of the field on the restart and Valentine would get his spot back up front.

However, now Valentine would have to contend with Yackey and when the green flag dropped the Maverick used the outside lane to get by Valentine and take the lead. Valentine did all he could to maintain the position but got loose coming out of turn 2 and was shuffled back several spots in the field.

When checkered flew it was Yackey taking his second straight win of the 2016 season with Derek Smith right behind in 2nd. Incredibly Ethan Penrod finished 3rd making a furious run from the rear to the front in just a few laps. 90p Kyle Patee took the 4th spot and Chad Cowan was 5th. The Late Models return to action Saturday June 4th.

11 Mod Coupes were on hand for the first race of the 2016 season at CNS. #5 Jason Bunt and #34 Randy Whitman paced the field when the green flag was dropped. Whitman showed his strength by grabbing the top spot and never looking back leading every single lap to take the win. Former Mod Coupe champion Frank Denning III also looked fast setting quick time and finishing 2nd in the feature. The hard charger of the night was #3 Ron ONeal who started at the back of the field and worked his way up to 3rd position in the feature. 6D Rick Duckworth was 4th and #48 Michael Cox rounded out the top 5.

Davis had to earn the victory coming from his 9th place starting spot to eventually catch and pass #21 Jamie Ward who had a large lead on the field. Possibly the most exciting battle on the track was for 3rd place as #7 David Robinson and #77 Michael Merchant thrilled the crowd as they banged on each other for at least a dozen laps.

It was the first feature win for Tyler Davis in the Pure Stock division at CNS. Ward settled for 2nd place with Robinson and Merchant in 3rd and 4th.
