Ursetta, Cox, Avants, & Livermore, visit winner’s circle on CVOR night

Updated: Mar 13, 2022

(08-09-2014 Dacono, CO) A great display of vintage race cars was one of the highlights of Colorado Vintage Oval Racers night at CNS and on the track Arvada Colorado’s Dominic Ursetta won his 7th Super Late Model Feature of the season and extended his point lead over Chris Eggleston and Bruce Yackey. Michael Cox held off Brent Miller and Brett Yackey to win the Super Stock feature and Roger “the Ice man” Avants won his first ever ERA Supermodified feature event. In the Figure 8s Harry Livermore Jr. made a late race pass on Jereme Wall to grab his first win of the 2014 season.

Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Models

Another fantastic field of Gillett Vet Clinic Super Late Models lined up for a 40 lap feature event and #66 Darren Bucklan took a commanding lead at the start of the race. Bucklan led the first 15 laps but that’s when #6 Dominic Ursetta who has been the car to beat this season went low and grabbed the lead. Ursetta never looked back winning his 7th feature of the 2014 season.

Behind the leaders Yackey ran all alone in 3rd as a great battle between #84 Matt Zwingleberg, #11 Darren Robertson, and #22 Chris Eggleston raged on for 4th position.

Ultimately Eggleston broke away from the pack and caught and passed Yackey to take 3rd position behind Bucklan in 2nd. Yackey settled for 4th while #48 Ed Veccherelli Jr. had an impressive 5th place finish.

NTC Logistics Super Stocks

Even with a small field of cars the NTC Logistic Super Stocks put on one of the most entertaining races of the night. At the drop of the green flag #3 Michael Cox and #32 Brett “the Maverick” Yackey were battling side by side. Cox was utilizing the low groove and Yackey was along side up top. The two cars remained this way until about the halfway mark of the race thrilling the CNS faithful.

As the leaders approached the lapped car of #44 Savannah Gallegos the 3 car went low and the 32 car went high but there wasn’t enough room for all three cars going into turn one and Gallegos and Yackey made contact sending both cars sliding into the turn one wall. Gallegos left the track in a shower of sparks while Yackey was able to continue under caution.

Not enough room for all three cars in turn 1 which almost ended Brett Yackey’s chance at the win. (Starr photo)

On the restart Yackey once again began to work on Cox for the lead but started to fade just a bit in the latter stages of the race. #19 Brent Miller snuck by Yackey and made his own bid for the win but it was too little, too late as Cox grabbed his second straight feature win and his 4th of the season.

ERA Supermodifieds

As the field of ERA Supermodifieds took the green flag for their 25 lap feature event, FAST DASH winner #33 Chris Sheil and #14 Joe Gallegos made contact and crashed hard into the turn 1 wall. Thankfully both drivers were okay but their cars suffered major damage and were towed to the pits.

After the cleanup an original restart was in order and #27 Roger the ”Ice Man” Avants jumped out to a commanding lead. #2 Richie Castor Jr. was reeling in Avants and began to pressure him for the lead. Joining the two leaders was the #58 of Kyle Ray making it a 3 car battle for the lead. They don’t call Roger the ”Ice Man” for nothing, as he was cool under pressure and navigated lapped traffic to perfection moving on to take his first ever win in a Supermodified.

Castor settled for second and a late race pass by #13 Ricky Otts over Ray secured 3rd position. Behind Ray in 4th was the #3 of Harold Evans.

Kyle Ray holds a slender 7 point lead over Harold Evans in the 2014 season standings.

Art’s Septic Figure 8s

As if shot from a cannon #15 Jereme Wall grabbed the lead of the Art’s Septic Service Figure 8 feature event and distanced himself from the field. Behind the leader #50 Justin Mackeachie and #17 Harry Livermore Jr. were slowly making up ground lap after lap.

Eventually Livermore and Jared “Wally” Wall in the #52 caught up with the 15 car and began to put on the heat. With just 4 laps to go Livermore snuck under Wall to take the lead and go on to win his first feature event of the 2014 season. Jereme Wall settled for 2nd place and Jared Wall came in 3rd.
