Mark Neff rides to his third straight Late Model win at CNS

Updated: Mar 12, 2022

(08-29-2015 Dacono Colorado) – On a gorgeous late fall evening at CNS hundreds of motorcycles lined the track for opening ceremonies after completing the 911 Memorial Ride to kick off a great night of racing. Mark Neff held off Jace Hansen and Brett Yackey to win his third South Philly Cheese Steaks Late Model feature in a row. Justin Case also won his third feature in a row in the SUNOCO Fuels Grand American Modifieds. In the Great Scotts Eatery Super Stocks Brett Yackey continued his mastery of the division winning his seventh feature of the season. Ricky Otts sent a string message to the ERA Supermodified field winning the feature by a massive 8.8 second margin.

South Philly Cheese Steaks Late Models

One of the most hotly contested races for the championship in 2015 has been the South Philly Cheese Steaks Late Models with #8 Jeff Walbaum and #42 Mark Neff battling tooth and nail week in and week out. Entering the 911 Memorial Ride Night Neff trailed Walbaum by just five points. Yet it’s Neff who has the hot hand lately winning the past two Late Model main events. Neff’s hot streak would continue as he would draw the pole position to start the feature while Walbaum would start deep in the field in 9th position.

With Neff on the pole and Walbaum pinned deep the 40 lap feature could have been a walk in the park for Neff yet #08 Jace Hansen was giving Neff a great battle for the lead. Joining the battle was #32 Brett Yackey who was racing with a great deal of determination. The top 3 cars were putting on a great race for the fans up until just past the halfway point when Neff started to build a significant lead on Hansen and Yackey.

With just 10 laps remaining the lapped car of #29 Rayshon Carter made contact with Hansen sending him spinning in turn two and bringing out the caution flag. Hansen would get his spot back and the field would bunch-up for a late race double file restart. Neff selected the outside lane for the restart which was the right decision as he maintained his lead at the green flag. Yackey made a hair-raising pass on Hansen down low entering turn three to takeover second spot as the laps wound down.

Neff went on to take the win, his fifth of the season as well as closing in on Walbaum for the points lead as the two drivers are now separated by just one point with only one race remaining.

Yackey would finish a strong second place while Hansen came home third. Walbaum took fourth place and 17d Dave Dienes was the final car in the top five.

SUNOCO Fuels Grand American Modifieds

At the start of the SUNOCO Fuels Grand American Modified feature event the two cars on the front row #77 Jeff Hansen and #95 Cris Muhler couldn’t seem to get an even start causing CNS Flagman “Smitty” to do a lot of gesturing, finger pointing, and eventually moving the cars back to the second row. This would prove to be the story of the race as #44 Justin Case and #13 Darin Clark took their spot up front.

Case didn’t waste his opportunity on the front row as he bolted out to a large lead that he would never relinquish. The race went green from flag to flag with Case out from the entire time.

Muhler would finish second and stay within 18 points of Hansen in the points chase who would finish third. Fourth place would go to Clark and #0 Ron O’Neil would be the final finisher in the top five. The Grand American Modifieds will make their final appearance at CNS on September 12th.

Great Scotts Eatery Super Stocks

Brett “the Maverick” Yackey has been nearly unbeatable in the Super Stock division in 2015. Of the 7 feature events run prior to tonight’s race Brett had came home first in 6 of the 7. Yackey would add a 7th win dominating the field and building a 15 car length lead on 2nd place #3 Michael Cox at the midway point. With just 5 laps to go Yackey’s lead began to fade as Cox came within a straightaway but it wouldn’t be enough as the youngster would take the win.

Behind Cox who finished 2nd was Scott Greenly who was filling in for his son Levi with an impressive 3rd place finish. #9 Curtis Heldenbrand finished a strong 4th and the surprise of the night was rookie #5 Glen Poston from Thornton Colorado who finished 5th and also won his dash.

ERA Supermodifieds

A very competitive field of 12 ERA Supermodifieds took the green flag for their feature event with #51 Joe Prisilac and #8 Lonnie Adamson from Salt Lake City on the front row. Adamsson who had won his dash race in impressive fashion took the lead at the green and stayed out front for the first several laps of the main event.

Behind Adamson #13 Ricky Otts, #58 Kyle Ray, #2 Richie Castor Jr., and #15 Josh Lewis were furiously working their way to the front to challenge for the lead. Once Otts and Ray had got around Adamson the race was on yet it didn’t seem as if Ray was making up any ground on Otts who was way out front.

By the time the checkered flag flew Otts had built an incredible 8.8 second lead on Ray who settled for second place. Castor Jr. took 3rd place and extended his point lead to 12 over #15 Josh Lewis who finished fourth in the race. The final car in the top 5 was #02 Johnny Pickard from Pueblo Colorado.
