On one of the most beautiful nights of the summer the fans at Colorado National Speedway were treated to not one, not two, not  three, but eight feature main events! Ed Vecchiarelli Jr. won both late model mains and Chris Eggleston won the Snap-On Tools Pro Truck main event.

The Rocky's Autos Late Models kicked things off with qualifying. #22 Chris Eggleston hot off his win at Dixie Motor Speedway in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division didn't miss a beat and set quicktime with a blazing fast 16.003.

Ed Vecchiarelli sweeps both main events on 8-22-2009 - Joe Starr PhotoIn the first of two main events for the Sunoco Fuel Grand American Modifieds car #44 Justin Case and car #69 Forest Smith started on the front row. Forest Smith had mechanical issues at the drop of the green which caused major jockeying of positions on lap one. Shawn Trackwell in the number 16 spun causing a chain reaction and several cars were damaged and unable to continue. Justin Case pressured Ed Vecchiarelli lap after lap in the early stages of the race but crafty Ed Vecchiarelli held him at bay. Car #95 Dave Finley and the #08 of series points leader Jace Hanson battled for 3rd place. But at the checkered flag it was veteran driver Ed Vecchiarelli taking the first feature win of the night.

Not to be outdone by his father Ed Vecchiarelli Jr. in car #48 won his ever late model feature event at Colorado National Speedway. Twenty two rocket fast Rocky's Autos Late Models took the track for the first of two 40 lap main events. After an early yellow, surprise leader Ed Vecchiarell Jr. paced the field with Darren Robertson right behind. On lap nine Ed Jr. got loose and Darren went low to take the lead. At lap 24, series points leader Chris Muhler spins down the back stretch after contact with #31 Rick Smith bringing out the caution. On the double file restart Ed Vecchiarelli Jr. used the outside line to gain the lead over Darren Robertson and at the stripe it was Ed Vecchiarell Jr. winning his first ever late model main event.

If you aren’t paying close attention, you can easily confuse a West car for any of our own Late Models, the difference is simply a larger, heavier engine and a heavier chassis.

hults-8-8-2009The 2009 Colorado National Speedway season is well under way. With no less than 8000 fans packing the grandstands night after night, the drivers are under a lot of pressure to perform, and perform they have!  97 points separate the top 5 drivers in the Rocky’s Autos Late Models division. Cris Muhler stands on top with Bruce “The Moose” Yackey a mere 28 points behind. And it’s a tight battle between Hults, Avants and Smith with only 8 points separating them. A technical penalty has taken Darren Robertson out of the race for points but it clearly hasn’t taken his mind off the competition as he continues to show the crowd what he can do behind the wheel.

Rocky's Autos Late Models

As the clouds loomed overhead at Colorado National Speedway, the fans packed the stands hoping that Mother Nature would finally take a break from her newfound Saturday rain shower tradition. It would appear that hoping wasn’t enough. For just as Cris Muhler took the lead over Ronnie Hults after a double file restart half way through the first Rocky's Autos Late Model A Main, the rain started to pour, ending the event. Thus, Cris Muhler took his 5th win of the season, holding on to his point lead for another night.
