Avants Wins a Wild One at CNS
Saturday, 11 September 2010 20:33
At Colorado National Speedway, the top dogs in the Speedy's Autos Late Models didn't disappoint. Avants fended off determined competitors, maintaining only a slight lead while a 5 way fight for 2nd place raged on behind him.
Speedy's Autos Late Models
16 Late Models hit the track for the 40 lap Main Event. #41 Mark Neff had the pole followed by #54 Joe James Jr. Behind the leaders #66 Darren Bucklen had the inside of row 2 with #27 Roger Avants on his outside. #74 Dan Savage had the inside of row three.
Joe James Jr lead the pack until Avants took the lead via the outside. At lap 4 Darren Bucklen spun out along the back stretch bringing out the yellow flag. Dan Savage and Bucklen were subsequently sent to the rear of the field. With 2 of the top five out of the way, #39 Jack Nugent found a quick line into 2nd behind Avants. Behind the leaders, Mark Neff lead a 4 way, fender to fender race for 3rd with #12 Bruce Yackey, #42 Ronnie Hults and #22 Chris Eggleston.
Tragically, a technical problem with the #39 of Jack Nugent took him out of the race. The resulting yellow flag lined up Avants and Neff in row one followed by Eggleston and Yackey in row two. Avants sped back into the lead on the restart. Just behind, Yackey made short work of Neff and Eggleston, taking 2nd with authority. A few car lengths back #31 Rick Smith edged himself into 3rd, leading a 4 way fight so tight you could throw a blanket over them.
Avants stuck his lead for the win followed by Yackey. 3rd through 6th place were photo finishes. See official results below.
#66 Kyle Clegg led the pack from the get go. Soon #22 Eggleston passed #34 rookie Chris Simons-Cooper and positioned himself on the inside of Clegg. By lap 6 Eggleston had the lead but Clegg wasn't one to be trifled with. He came back up on the inside of Eggleston and the two drag raced through 3 laps. At lap 9 Eggleston suddenly boosted into a comfortable lead. Caution 2 laps later lined Eggleston and Clegg back up for a double file restart. Clegg jumped back into the lead when the green flag flew but Eggleston wasn't far behind. He used the next 2 laps to catch up with and pass Clegg. As Eggleston grew his lead, #17 Terry Plummer joined the fight with the pack leaders, pulling up on the outside of Clegg and passing him for 2nd place. With only 5 laps to go, caution brought the field back together one last time. Eggleston sped back into the lead on the restart and finished first, Clegg bested Plummer taking second along with the RMLRA Legend Series point lead. Plummer took 3rd followed by #18 Kyle McCartney.
ERA Supermodified
#29 Craig Moore rocketed to the lead to start the 25 lap Super Modified feature. Soon #02 Johnny Pickard and #33 Chris Sheil were coming up from behind with their sites set on Moore. Pickard passed Moore on the outside and Sheil followed suit. A yellow flag brought the gang back together for a restart and Sheil left the track. When green flag racing resumed, #2 Rich Castor Jr blew past his competitors, moving into 2nd place hot on the heels of Pickard. With only a few laps left, #02 Johnny Pickard finished first followed by Castor.
Sheds-R-Us Super Stocks
A massive field of ground pounding super stocks rolled out onto the pavement to the jubilant cheers of a crowd of thousands at Colorado National Speedway. The smell of burning rubber and gasoline filled the air as the pack of muscle revved it up to start the 25 lap Main Event. #46 "Lightning" Rick Lothert started on the pole and lead the field lap after lap. Congrats to Lothert for winning another Super Stock Main event!
