Saturday, September 19th marked the 2nd to last event of the year at Colorado National Speedway. It was the 35th annual Snap-On Tools challenge cup. Over one hundred drivers in 6 different division showed up. Modified Coupes, Super Modified, Figure 8s, Legends and Super Stocks would take to the track for their last night of the 2009 season.

nick-haygoodAll of the ERA super mod guys delivered what was by far, one of their best races of the season at CNS. #11 Nick Haygood started dead last and spent the first 5 laps charging through the field to take 2nd behind #40 Harry Stone. Things changed for the top dogs when Paco Moralles' #14 supermodified blew up. The field lined back up for a single file restart and it was a safe bet that Haygood would take over the lead. This was not the case. Stone took off on the restart, regaining his massive lead in an instant. With his eyes set on another win, Haygood steadily reeled in Harry Stone until the very last moment, finally passing him AT THE FINISH LINE for the win by about 6 inches. Haygood won the race, but Rich Castor Jr took 3rd place along with the season championship! Congrats to our winners Nick Haygood and Rich Castor Jr! We'll see you guys next year.

matt-burton-rotyFrank Denning was on hand to defend his point lead against Gary Land for the last CARC Modified Coupe A Main of the season. Guest star Blackey Blackard showed up to helm Joe Sullivan's #51 Coupe. Through 25 laps, #90 Frank Denning showed us all once and for all that he knows the fastest line around the 3/8ths paved oval at Colorado National Speedway. Denning took the win by a mile followed by #15 Richard Bubak, #45 Carl Vair and #55 Gary Land. #36 Matt Burton pulled up behind Frank Denning in winner's circle to be honored with the distinction of modified coupe, rookie of the year. Congrats to Frank and Matt. We look forward to seeing the both of you guys in 2010!

The Crazy Loveland Goodyear Figure Eighters wrapped up their season with more close calls than we've seen all year long. Starting on the pole, our Point leader Joe Matlock nearly lost his tire going into lap 2. It was a crazy turn of events, because #23 Al Duran (whose vehicle was losing pieces as the race went on) needed a win by 13 places to take the season championship. With Matlock handicapped, it looked like he'd have a shot at the season win. Luckily for Matlock, a yellow flag flew before he could get too far behind. This gave him the opportunity to head to the pits to get his tire fixed up. It was lap 4, #26 Nick Martinez had the lead followed by #24 Joe Martinez. #81 David Smith was in 3rd with #23 Al Duran in 4th place. Matlock made it back to the track to take his spot in 13th place just as the rest of the field was lining up and ready for green flag racing. Big Al Duran moved into second as Joe Matlock moved up the field thanks to his brand spankin' new tire. Try as they might, nobody could catch Nick the quick Martinez. Nick passed the checkered first followed by Al Duran and season champion Joe Matlock.

The RMLRA Legends brought out a field of 22 cars. #66 Kyle Clegg rocketed from 6th place to take the lead going into lap 2. #8 Jon Krizman and #21 Terry Plummer followed in 2nd and 3rd. By lap 16 Jon Krizman had caught up to Clegg and rode along side him on the inside through 3 laps, finally passing him as the two rode along the front stretch through lap 19. Clegg wasn't out though! A bit of nice driving brought him back into the lead via the inside going through turn 2 of the very next lap. He held onto his lead for the win. #8 Jon Krizman, our 2009 season champion took 2nd followed by #21 Terry Plummer. In 4th place was #3 Wayne Barlock, the RMLRA season champion.

A huge field of 28 cars hit the track for our very last Doc Popcorn Super Stock A Main of the 2009 season. #36 Matt Burton didn't flinch as he made his way around the track in 1st place 23 times in a row. Caution lined him back up with #92 Alex Grasso who quickly ran away with the lead while #17 Jeremy Barclay and #46 Rick Lothert entered the battle for 2nd. Barclay came out of nowhere and took the lead. A spin out in turn 2 lead to a yellow but the checkered flew regardless thus, Jeremy Barclay won the last Doc Popcorn Super Stock A Main of the 09 season. #92 Alexander Grasso took 2nd place along with the season championship.
